Great Gas Prices fueled by Recession

Last month I wrote about gas prices dropping because of the recession. I wonder if gas prices can be used as a direct barometer for the state of this recession, if so then I guess its gotten worse because gas prices are lower this month. Just today I paid $1.44/gallon after a 15 cent per gallon discount with my My Bi-Lo card at Sunoco (shop Bi-Lo, get discount at participating gas stations) – compared to last month when I paid 10-15 cents more at the pump.
So do progressively lower gas prices indicate a worsening economy? I don’t know, what do you think?
