Gmail Error 103 – revisited

Back on September 15, 2008 I posted “Gmail – Oops… a server error occurred and your email was not sent. (#103)“ but re-reading it today I felt it needed to be more about fixing the error instead of being a narrative about my issue.

WHAT CAUSES ERROR 103

I can’t say for sure but I get the feeling that Gmail Error 103 is a temporary error (except for the August 11th “crash day” noted in Kevin Burke’s My Gmail is Still Down) that may occur if:

  • you try to type an email too quickly then send it (I often lock up computers clicking stuff more quickly than the computer reacts), or…
  • if their server is busy or something, or if something happens between you and the Gmail server

TRY TO FIX GMAIL ERROR 103

  1. CHECK SENT MAIL AND SEE IF YOUR MESSAGE(S) WENT OUT
    According to a user in a Google groups post dated August 8th of this year, check your Sent Mail. When I did the emails I was trying to send were actually there
  2. TRY LOGGING IN USING SECURE GMAIL LOGIN
    Try logging in at https://mail.google.com and according to Gmail Help Discussion Center if doing this helps you should try enabling the ‘Always use HTTPS’ setting in your Gmail
  3. Try using “old style” Basic HTML (See screenshot below)
  4. TRY GMAIL HELP CENTER
    The Gmail Help Center can help you navigate through actions to take or to identify issues for you when your Gmail acts up. Under Recommended Articles on the right is an link to ‘Oops…’ errors which is where I went the first day I had this error 103 and it ran me through a helpful troubleshooter
  5. TRY USER GROUPS
    Gmail Help Discussion Group has news, info and a known issues link which is great for those of us having problems with Gmail

    My expirience with the error #103:
    - I get it always if I send mail with the attachment.
    - I tried HTTPS, basic HTML/standard, old gmail version,
    - I cleared the cookies
    Problem with sending the mail with the attachment persists!!!
    The mail sending without attachment runs.

    But if I change computer I can send mails with the same attachment!
    I tried already many other computer, everywhere it was running.
    Only on my copmuter (windows XT, SP3, IE or Firefox) I cannot send mail with the attachment.

    Could everyone help me?

    Exactly the same problem here with marian daubner… I need to send file attachments, but I can’t!

    Marian & Ozzy, have you made sure the issue is not the attachment you are trying to send? If the size of the picture is big and your Internet connection is slow that *might* be an issue. try sending something from your computer like a short text file.

    If that doesn’t work for you then hit suggestion #4 and #5 above really hard. If the Gmail Help Center doesn’t fix it for you then you should be able to read around and even post in the Gmail Help Discussion Group. It looks like an extensive resource.

    “Unfortunately” Gmail sends my attachements just fine. Here are my computer specs: AT HOME 1 > Windows XP SP3, Gmail works in Firefox 3, Flock 2, Internet Explorer 7, and Opera 9. AT HOME 2 > Windows Vista Home Premium (laptop), Gmail works in Firefox 3 and Flock 2. AT WORK > Windows XP SP2, Gmail works in Firefox 3, Flock 2, Internet Explorer 8 BETA, and Google Chrome.

    I haven’t had any problems sending or receiving Gmail beyond 1 or 2 hours at most, ever. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

    Ever since my computer got affected by the google redirect virus, i’m having the exact same problem while sending mail.
    Anyone have the solution?
