Cray + Windows = A Good Idea?
Take one of the world’s foremost supercomputer makers and combine them with one of the most complained about operating system makers and what do you get? Cray and Microsoft seem to think you get an inexpensive supercomputer, and ZDnet wrote Microsoft and Cray to unveil $25,000 Windows-based supercomputer about exactly that.
However, I can’t help but think of the possibly humorous side of this technological parternship’s possiblilities. Imagine the new sayings and things that can happen with Windows (well Windows HPC Server 2008) running on a Cray computer…
- I must say that was the fastest crash I’ve ever seen!
- Wow, look at the new Cobalt Screen of Death. Oh, and look it says “Click OK to switch to Maroon Screen of Death“, neato!
- System Error: The registry is missing or corrupt. Click OK to rebuild your Registry from scratch (all data will be lost), or click Cancel to continue (you will be sent to the Cobalt Screen of Death, or if you prefer the Maroon Screen of Death).
- Wow this is a smart computer! When I left yesterday it was working fine. Today I came in and it was working even better. So I right-clicked on “My SuperComputer”, and selected “Properties” and where yesterday it said “Windows HPC server 2008“, today it says “Red Hat (Linux) Enterprise Linux 5 for HPC” - and no one’s been in the building all night. I tell you the computer decided to trash Windows and install Linux all on its own!!
- I can’t imagine why its running so slow today. All I did, besides running the scheduled work jobs was a little customizing. I changed the wallpaper, the screensaver, oh and look I downloaded these really cool desktop icons and custom mouse cursors. Now whenever I roll over one of the active windows, it plays a cool ringtone!
