UPDATE: I’ve written a newer post for fixing Gmail errors. If “HERE’S WHAT HELPED ME” in the section below doesn’t work for you, then try beginning at item 2 on Gmail Error 103 - revisited instead.

Working in Gmail yesterday I got the errors below. I don’t know what the error codes meant (yet) but I know what got rid of the errors and got me working right again. These are the errors I got in Gmail yesterday in Firefox 2:

Oops… the system encountered a problem (#6502)

Oops… the system encountered a problem (#717 )

I didn’t notice the error at first when it showed up on the screen, but I think I was archiving emails when the Oops… the system encountered a problem (#6502) message showed up, then send an email I got the Oops… the system encountered a problem (#717) error. I went to the Gmail Help center and ended up reading the ‘Oops…’ errors article, which didn’t list error 6502 or 717. A quick search on Google was not useful. Here’s what I did next….

HERE’S WHAT HELPED ME

I logged out and tried logging back in and could not get in. I closed Firefox and opened Opera 9 and tried logging in and still coudn’t get in. I switched over to my other Windows XP computer and logged in using Firefox and got in fine. I found the email I was working on earlier when I go the 717 error and re-sent it. I closed the browser and moved back to the original computer I had been working on and logged into Gmail using Firefox again and everything’s been fine since then. I think time was the real fix, and the Gmail servers got temporarily busy and couldn’t handle my requests.

Anyone had Gmail oops error 6502 or Gmail oops error 717 and know the cause?

  1. I’m getting the same error(Oops… the system encountered a problem (#717))… Logging out and coming back in seemed to fix it though. I think it started when I clicked to save a draft of a message I was working on - cause it lost my changes… No biggie seeing as I hadn’t typed all that much - But still. It is the first time that has happened with gmail. Hopefully though, this isn’t indicative of more flakiness coming up with the gmail service.

  2. I also got the 717 error. Although it fixed itself by the time I found this site and started writing this comment.

I checked the google site you posted (oops errors article)… I clicked on “other code”.

If you’re using ZoneAlarm (like me), that’s probably the issue once in a while, I’m not using any of the other software listed on their site.

Probably just a temporal error. Hope everything working fine for you.

  3. I’m getting 6502 error right now, can’t send any emails.. got here from google while looking for a solution

  4. Same thing as Nadav…

I just got a 6502 error, and also wound up here after Googling the error code.

  5. I have only ever got the 6502 error code on trying to SEND so quickly after writing email. I think that as gmail seems to auto save as we type it is busy trying to SAVE as we are trying to SEND. I now experience error 6502 a lot less now that I stop to read and correct spelling first before clicking SEND - hope it helps :)

  6. I couldn’t really say since I don’t remember, my latest Gmail error was a 103, which was actually kind of humorous.

Thanks for weighing in with your thoughts.

  7. Have been having endless trouble with gmail for the past three days, getting all the error codes mentioned here. This has never happened to me before and I’ve been using gmail for the past two and a half years at least. I must say that I do not find their “help” features very helpful. Has anyone got a reliable fix for this. I’ll be so grateful for any help that really works.

  8. 6502 has cropped up several times in the past three days. Never had any trouble before that. Can’t find any answer that fixes the problem properly. Things work for a few minutes and then go bananas again. Help, please!!!
