Gmail has been horrible for me for some weeks now, and switching to Basic HTML has made it really good again. I think they must have been loading up on browser intensive functionality these last few months and suddenly hit a wall for older machines like mine. I can live without all the fancy stuff for now. As I recall, before our problems even started. We still had major problems opening and viewing e-mails. I'm not sure it will help, but Chrome does have that fast javascript engine PLUS the tabs crash separately instead of crashing the browser + all of its tabs. It may not fit your "style", but I use Chrome specifically for Gmail and a few other tasks,leaving other browsers for everything else. I like all those options, something is just wrong with Gmail lately, I tried their "help" yeah, wasted time to say the least!
