Windows ‘Bug’: Windows cannot find [website address] - Revisited

May 14th, 2008 by George

Its really great when you can go to your own blog to solve a technical issue, and today I got tired of getting error messages every day in Windows Live Mail (probably from Thunderbird as well). All I need do is click a web link when Firefox is not open and bingo:

Windows cannot find ‘<website address>’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search a site for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Well, fortunately I’d already written Windows ‘Bug’: Windows cannot find [website address] this past Christmas addressing this very issue, but today I got to the meat of the issue more quickly. So if you are having this trouble you can check my other post, but I’d recommend doing this first. This is the excerpt from mozillaZine’s knowledgebase that solved my problem:

Copied from  mozillaZine’s knowledgebase article “Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox”:

 File Types edit

(In Windows XP and Windows 2000)

1. Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer).
2. Go to Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types
3. Select Extension: “(NONE)” File Type: “URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol”
4. Click “Advanced”. In the “Edit File Type” window, select “open” and click “Edit”
5. Uncheck “Use DDE” (the dialog should then hide the lower part).
6. Click OK for that dialog and the next one (afterwards, the “Use DDE” box is still checked but the “DDE Message” box will be cleared, as shown here)
7. Repeat for Extension: “(NONE)” File Type: “URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy” (and any other protocols you want to fix)
8. Repeat for Extension: “(NONE)” File Type: “Firefox URL”
9. Repeat for Extension: “HTM” (or “HTML”) File Type: “Firefox Document”

It took me longer to write this post than it did to solve the problem! Happy computing.

I’m glad that one of my posts helped someone besides me! I also got worn down by the error message, and this was at least the second time its happened on my current work computer.
